Darby River - Wilsons Promontory

Wilsons Promontory National Park is an amazingly diverse and highly popular tourist destination at the south-eastern tip of Australia, with fantastic walking tracks, clear rivers, abundant wildlife, magnificent views, unusual features and beautiful scenery. It's also a wonderful place to see wildlife in their natural environment, go for bush walks, relax on the beaches and take photographs - at any time of year.

Darby River flows in twists and turns through part of the National Park. According to Parks Victoria, it was also the site of the original settlement, and a Chalet that was previously constructed has since been demolished. Some concrete remains can be found near the car park...I wonder if they were the remnants from the past?

Postcards, Gifts and Souvenirs - You can find a small range of items for sale at the shop at Tidal River camping ground.

How To Get There - The turnoff to Darby River at Wilsons Promontory, is about half way between Tidal River and the Park Entrance gateway. Keep a lookout for signs of the river and turn right into the Darby River Car Park just after you cross the bridge.

From the Darby River Car Park you can take the 4 kilometer walk to Tongue Point which is described as easy to moderate and very picturesque, walk the easy 1 kilometer sand track to Darby Beach or hike several kilometers along the roadway to Darby Saddle, then across to Tongue Point and back to the Darby River Car Park (approximately a 12 kilometer round trip).

The photograph on the top of the page is the view over the Darby River Bridge and looking out towards Vereker Outlook.

Facilities - Power boating is not permitted on the river itself, but many birds and wildlife flock to this area for feed and water. There is a self composting toilet situated just alongside the car park and more parking spaces along the road if the car park is full.
